Cricket Net Setup Cost in India: Lanes, Nets, Machines: a Turf Access guide

By Turf Access · · 8 min read

The cricket net setup cost in India is roughly ₹3 to 8 lakh for two practice lanes and ₹10 to 20 lakh for a four-lane academy setup, going by one builder's turnkey quotes (Champ Courts). Lights and a bowling machine are extra, and other builders quote much higher, up to ₹8 to 18 lakh per lane in North India (Stark Sports). The final number depends on the surface, net quality, frame height, lights and whether you add a machine.

Nets are cheaper and smaller than a full box cricket turf, which is why many owners in Chennai and other cities add two or four lanes to a plot or a rooftop. Below are the lane sizes, what each part costs, worked examples for 2 and 4 lanes, and how centres fill their nets.

Cricket net size: length, width and height

A practice lane has to fit a full pitch, space behind the batter and room for the bowler to run in. The Laws of Cricket fix the pitch at 22 yards, which is 66 ft or 20.12 m between the stumps (MCC Laws of Cricket).

Sources differ a little. Heega Sports gives 10 to 12 ft for both width and height for most practice nets, with up to 15 ft at professional centres (Heega Sports). For an indoor hall, the England and Wales Cricket Board recommends an internal length of 33.62 m (about 110 ft) so the full run-up fits (ECB).

Cricket net price: HDPE vs nylon

The net is one of the cheaper parts of the build, but it is the part players hit all day, so quality matters.

Net typeListed priceSource
HDPE cricket net (all listings)₹2–₹23 per sq ft, most ₹3–₹10IndiaMART listings
Braided nylon, 2.5 mmabout ₹4.80–₹7.50 per sq ftIndiaMART listings
Braided nylon, 3 mmabout ₹6–₹6.50 per sq ftIndiaMART listings

What to ask your supplier about:

  • Material. HDPE (polyethylene) and nylon are both common. Champ Courts specifies knotless 3 mm or 4 mm braided polyethylene, UV-treated (Champ Courts).
  • Mesh size. Around 40 to 50 mm. The ECB suggests 50 mm knotted or 40 mm knotless netting (ECB). A leather ball will not pass through either.
  • Thickness or ply. Thicker twine (2.5 mm, 3 mm and up) costs more per sq ft but takes more hits before it tears.
  • UV treatment. Essential for outdoor nets that sit in the sun all year.

Example: how much net does a lane need?

Take lanes 66 ft long, 12 ft wide and 12 ft high, side by side, sharing the middle walls, with a roof net.

2 lanes4 lanes
Side walls (66 × 12 ft each)3 walls = 2,376 sq ft5 walls = 3,960 sq ft
Back wall (12 ft high)24 × 12 = 288 sq ft48 × 12 = 576 sq ft
Roof net66 × 24 = 1,584 sq ft66 × 48 = 3,168 sq ft
Total netting4,248 sq ft7,704 sq ft
At ₹3–₹10 per sq ft₹12,744–₹42,480₹23,112–₹77,040

Add a margin for wastage, edge rope and stitching. Redo this with your own lane length and height before you compare quotes.

Frame and poles

The frame holds the nets up and takes the load when the wind blows or a ball hits the net. Most outdoor lanes use GI (galvanised iron) or MS (mild steel) pipe.

  • A movable MS pipe frame for a single 45 × 12 × 10 ft lane is listed at ₹40,000 before tax (IndiaMART listings). That is a shorter, portable frame, not a permanent full-length structure.
  • Permanent frames for full-length lanes are usually part of a builder's turnkey quote. Ask for pipe diameter, wall thickness, galvanising, pole spacing and foundation depth to be written into the quote.

Taller frames use more steel, so the step from 12 ft to 15 ft nets adds cost.

Surface: mat, synthetic turf or astro

The surface is where most of the per sq ft cost sits. Champ Courts gives these rates (Champ Courts):

SurfaceRate per sq ft
Matting on a PCC (plain concrete) base₹40–₹60, plus about ₹90 for the PCC base
Cricket synthetic turf₹55–₹80
Astro turf₹40–₹55

Separately, cricket pitch turf and mats on IndiaMART are listed from about ₹45 to ₹110 per sq ft depending on material and thickness (IndiaMART listings).

A single 66 × 12 ft lane is 792 sq ft. At ₹55 to ₹80 per sq ft, synthetic turf for that lane comes to ₹43,560 to ₹63,360, before the base underneath it. This is an example; your rate will depend on the product and the base your builder recommends.

Lights

Evening slots are often the busiest, so most outdoor nets need floodlights. Champ Courts puts floodlights for a net setup at ₹80,000 to ₹2 lakh (Champ Courts). Ask for the number of poles, the wattage of each fitting and whether the quote includes wiring and the electrical panel.

Bowling machine price and how centres charge for it

A bowling machine lets a player practise alone or with one friend, which opens up hours that would otherwise sit empty.

Machine (ball type)Listed priceSource
Leverage iBot 360 (tennis, rubber)₹15,000Leverage
Leverage iWinner (tennis, rubber)₹30,000–₹38,500Leverage

Leverage Yantra (3-wheel, leather)₹2,65,000–₹3,50,000Leverage
Bola Professional₹3,51,540 (₹4,80,110 with auto feeder)Rank Engineering, Chennai

Champ Courts budgets ₹2 to 4 lakh for a bowling machine add-on in a net build (Champ Courts). Remember the running costs too: machine balls, servicing and an operator to feed the machine if it has no auto feeder.

How centres charge. Most charge by the hour, with a higher rate for a lane with a machine. In Hyderabad, Champ Courts lists ₹300 to ₹600 an hour for an outdoor turf net off-peak, ₹800 to ₹1,200 for an indoor synthetic net at peak, ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 for a net with a bowling machine, and ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 for a coach-led academy session (Champ Courts). Cricket nets listed on Hudle in Delhi start from about ₹150, with some venues from ₹800 (Hudle).

Example: when does a machine pay for itself? Say a leather ball machine costs ₹90,000 and you charge ₹500 more per hour for the machine lane than for a plain lane. ₹90,000 ÷ ₹500 = 180 machine hours to recover the price, before balls and servicing. Use your own rate and machine price.

Example: cost of 2 lanes and 4 lanes

These examples add Champ Courts' turnkey ranges, its floodlight range and a bowling machine from the table above. They exclude land, a roof or shed, washrooms and GST.

2 lanes (low)2 lanes (high)4 lanes (low)4 lanes (high)
Build: base, surface, frame, nets₹3,00,000₹8,00,000₹10,00,000₹20,00,000
Floodlights₹80,000₹2,00,000₹1,60,000₹4,00,000
One bowling machine₹30,000₹3,51,540₹30,000₹3,51,540
Total₹4,10,000₹13,51,540₹11,90,000₹27,51,540

Arithmetic: for 2 lanes (low), ₹3,00,000 + ₹80,000 + ₹30,000 = ₹4,10,000. For 4 lanes we doubled the floodlight range (₹80,000 × 2 and ₹2,00,000 × 2) as an assumption; your builder's lighting design may differ, and some academy quotes already include lights.

Compare this with Stark Sports' North India figure of ₹8 to 18 lakh per lane including base, netting, GI frame and lighting (Stark Sports). The gap between sources is wide, which is why three itemised quotes are worth the effort. For land, approvals and other costs around Chennai, see our guide to turf setup cost in Chennai.

Indoor vs outdoor cricket net setup

Outdoor nets cost less to build because you skip the shed. You need UV-treated netting, a frame that handles wind, drainage for the rains, and floodlights for evening slots.

An indoor cricket net setup lets you run in the rain and the midday heat, and indoor synthetic nets command higher peak rates in Hyderabad (Champ Courts). But the building must be tall and long enough. The ECB asks for the top net to be at least 5 m (16 ft) high and an internal length of about 33.62 m (110 ft) for full run-ups (ECB). A shed or hall of that size is a separate civil cost, so get it quoted on its own.

Ideas to fill your nets

Nets earn when the lanes are booked across the day, not only at 6 pm. Champ Courts notes that peak hours (6 to 9 am and 5 to 9 pm) cost 30 to 50% more (Champ Courts). Some ways to use the other hours:

  • Tie up with a coaching academy. Rent lanes to a coach for fixed morning and evening batches, paid monthly.
  • Run your own coaching slots. Coach-led sessions are priced well above plain net hire (Champ Courts).
  • Sell machine sessions to solo players. A player who can't find a bowler can still practise.
  • Offer monthly packs. Regular players who book the same slot each week fill your calendar early.
  • Schools and colleges. Off-peak afternoon slots suit school teams and college sides.
  • Discount quiet hours. A lower off-peak rate is better than an empty lane. Our guide on pricing your turf per hour explains how to set peak and off-peak rates.
