Pickleball Court Size in Feet: Dimensions and Sq Ft
Pickleball court size in feet: the 20 × 44 ft court, 7 ft kitchen, net height, sq ft with run-off for 1, 2 or 4 courts, and the indoor ceiling height.
A pickleball court size in feet is 20 ft wide by 44 ft long, the same for singles and doubles, which is 880 sq ft of playing area (USA Pickleball). The non-volley zone, called the kitchen, runs 7 ft from the net on each side, and the net is 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches at the centre. With safe run-off around it, one court needs at least 30 × 60 ft (1,800 sq ft), and 34 × 64 ft (2,176 sq ft) is recommended for a new build.
This guide covers each measurement on the court, the total area for one, two and four courts, indoor ceiling height, converting a badminton or tennis court, and what to plan if you are building courts in Chennai or anywhere else in India.
Pickleball court dimensions at a glance
The official rulebook sets one court size for every format, so there is no separate singles court to plan for.
| Part of the court | Feet | Metres (approx.) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Court (singles and doubles) | 20 × 44 | 6.1 × 13.4 | USA Pickleball |
| Non-volley zone (kitchen) | 7 ft from the net, each side | 2.13 | USA Pickleball |
| Service court | 10 × 15 | 3.0 × 4.6 | Junckers |
| Line width | 2 inches | 5 cm | USA Pickleball |
| Net height at sidelines | 36 inches | 0.91 | USA Pickleball |
| Net height at centre | 34 inches | 0.86 | USA Pickleball |
| Distance between net posts | 22 ft | 6.71 | USA Pickleball |
Court area in sq ft
The pickleball court area is simple arithmetic:
- Whole court: 20 × 44 = 880 sq ft (about 82 sq m)
- Each kitchen: 20 × 7 = 140 sq ft, so 280 sq ft for both
- Each service court: 10 × 15 = 150 sq ft, four in all
The kitchen (non-volley zone)
The kitchen is the 7 ft strip on each side of the net where players may not volley. The rulebook counts the kitchen lines as part of the kitchen (USA Pickleball). Mark these lines clearly. Arguments about a foot on the line are common, and a faded kitchen line makes them worse.
Lines and colours
All lines are 2 inches wide, one colour, and should stand out clearly from the surface (USA Pickleball). The centre line splits each side into the left and right service courts, from the kitchen line back to the baseline. If your floor also carries badminton or tennis lines, use a different colour for pickleball so players are not confused.
Net height and posts
The net is 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches at the centre, and the net itself should be at least 21 ft 9 inches long (USA Pickleball). The posts stand 22 ft apart, so each post sits about a foot outside the sideline.
A centre strap holds the middle down to 34 inches. Check it with a tape every few weeks, because nets stretch and sag in the heat. A net that has crept up to 35 inches changes the game more than most owners expect, and regular players will notice.
How much space one pickleball court needs
The 20 × 44 ft court is only the lines. Players need room to chase lobs behind the baseline and wide balls past the sideline.
| Total surface | Feet | Sq ft | Metres | Sq m | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 30 × 60 | 1,800 | 9.1 × 18.3 | 167 | USA Pickleball |
| Recommended for new courts | 34 × 64 | 2,176 | 10.4 × 19.5 | 202 | USA Pickleball, ASBA |
| Wider margin | 40 × 64 | 2,560 | 12.2 × 19.5 | 238 | Pickleheads |
The 34 × 64 ft size means at least 7 ft beside each sideline and 10 ft behind each baseline (American Sports Builders Association). For tennis court conversions, the same guidance accepts tighter margins of about 5 ft at the sides and 8 ft at the ends, which is where the 30 × 60 ft minimum comes from (American Sports Builders Association).
If you are building fresh on open land, use 34 × 64 ft. The extra 376 sq ft is cheap compared with a player running into a fence or a wall.
Area for 2 or 4 courts side by side
Many owners plan two or four courts, so that one plot and one set of staff serve more bookings at the same hour. The table below is an Example of the arithmetic, using each court's own surface laid edge to edge. Your builder may share some run-off between courts, but no court should end up with less than the minimum.
| Layout | Using 30 × 60 ft per court | Using 34 × 64 ft per court |
|---|---|---|
| 1 court | 30 × 60 = 1,800 sq ft | 34 × 64 = 2,176 sq ft |
| 2 courts side by side | 60 × 60 = 3,600 sq ft | 68 × 64 = 4,352 sq ft |
| 4 courts in a row | 120 × 60 = 7,200 sq ft | 136 × 64 = 8,704 sq ft |
| 4 courts in a 2 × 2 block | 60 × 120 = 7,200 sq ft | 68 × 128 = 8,704 sq ft |
Arithmetic: for two courts side by side, the widths add up (34 + 34 = 68 ft) and the length stays 64 ft, so 68 × 64 = 4,352 sq ft.
Two things to note:
- A row of courts suits a long, narrow plot. A 2 × 2 block suits a squarer plot and makes one fenced enclosure easier.
- Between neighbouring courts, add a divider net. A light barrier stops balls rolling into the next game, which is the most common complaint at busy multi-court venues.
In Chennai land units
In Chennai and the rest of Tamil Nadu, land is often sold by the ground (2,400 sq ft) or the cent (about 436 sq ft). Using the recommended 34 × 64 ft per court:
- One court: 2,176 sq ft, about 0.9 ground or 5 cents
- Two courts: 4,352 sq ft, about 1.8 grounds or 10 cents
- Four courts: 8,704 sq ft, about 3.6 grounds or 20 cents
These figures are only the playing surface. Add space for a walkway, seating, a washroom, drinking water and two-wheeler parking.
Indoor pickleball: ceiling height
Lobs are a big part of pickleball, so a low roof spoils the game. Junckers, a sports flooring maker, gives a minimum of 18 ft (about 5.5 m) of clear height above the playing surface, and 20 to 26 ft (about 6.1 to 7.9 m) as the preferred range (Junckers).
When you measure, go to the lowest thing hanging over the court: a light fitting, a beam, a ceiling fan or a sheet-roof truss. A shed with a 24 ft ridge can still have trusses at 16 ft along the sides.
Indoor courts are worth pricing in Indian cities because they can be booked in the afternoon heat and through the monsoon. If you are choosing between an open court and a covered one, a roof also protects the surface from sun and rain.
Converting a badminton or tennis court
From a badminton court
A doubles badminton court is also 44 × 20 ft (Champ Courts), so the lines line up almost exactly. The differences are elsewhere:
| Item | Badminton | Pickleball |
|---|---|---|
| Court lines | 44 × 20 ft | 44 × 20 ft |
| Net height at centre | 5 ft (1.524 m) | 34 inches |
| Common footprint with run-off | 52 × 28 ft club size | 60 × 30 ft minimum |
| Recommended clear height | about 23 ft (7 m) for recreational play | 18 ft minimum, 20–26 ft preferred |
Badminton figures from Champ Courts; pickleball figures from USA Pickleball and Junckers.
A badminton hall built to about 23 ft of clear height has room for pickleball overhead. The squeeze is usually at the ends: a 52 × 28 ft badminton footprint is 8 ft shorter and 2 ft narrower than the 30 × 60 ft pickleball minimum. Measure the space behind each baseline before you paint lines. You will also need a pickleball net or posts that take both nets, and pickleball lines in a contrasting colour.
From a tennis court
A tennis court's doubles lines measure 78 × 36 ft (Superior Play Systems), and the full fenced area is large enough to fit four pickleball courts (Pickleheads). The usual layout is two rows of two courts, turned across the tennis court. A tennis net is higher than a pickleball net, so use portable pickleball nets on each new court rather than the tennis net.
If you want more room around each court, two pickleball courts on one tennis court is the more comfortable choice.
Surface options in brief
The surface changes how the ball bounces and how players' knees feel after an hour.
- Acrylic on concrete or asphalt: the common outdoor choice, easy to repaint and re-line.
- Cushioned acrylic: extra rubber layers under the colour coat, softer for regular adult players.
- Modular tiles: quick to lay on an existing slab, and can be lifted if you move.
- Wooden or synthetic sports floor: for indoor halls, especially if the hall also runs badminton.
Whatever you choose, the base must be level and drain well. Puddles near the kitchen line are a safety problem and a cancelled booking. Prices for each surface are in our guide to pickleball court cost in India.
What owners in India should plan
- Orientation: outdoor courts should run north–south so players do not face the rising or setting sun (USA Pickleball).
- Run-off first, number of courts second: fit as many 34 × 64 ft boxes as the plot allows, then drop to the minimum only where you must.
- Fencing and divider nets: pickleballs are light and roll far. Fence the whole block and add low nets between courts.
- Lights: after-work evening slots are when many people can play, so plan lighting for every court from the start.
- Shade and water: in Chennai's heat, a covered seating area and drinking water keep groups coming back.
- Booking rules: doubles needs four players, and groups often book together. Think about slot lengths and how you will price peak and off-peak hours; see how to price your turf per hour.
How Turf Access helps
Once your courts are marked out, Turf Access helps you fill them. Each venue gets its own booking link, and players can also book through a shared WhatsApp number by picking the day, court, time and length. They pay the advance straight to your own UPI ID and tap Payment done (sharing the UTR is optional), and you check it against your bank and confirm. There is no commission.
If you run two or four courts, the day's board shows every court on your phone, and you can set peak, weekend and off-peak prices per court. Walk-ins and phone bookings you add are free. See how the pickleball court booking system works.
Frequently asked questions
What is the pickleball court size in feet?
A pickleball court is 20 ft wide and 44 ft long for both singles and doubles, which is 880 sq ft of playing area. The non-volley zone, or kitchen, runs 7 ft from the net on each side.
How much total area do I need for one pickleball court?
USA Pickleball sets a minimum playing surface of 30 × 60 ft, which is 1,800 sq ft. For new courts, 34 × 64 ft (2,176 sq ft) is recommended, which gives 7 ft at the sides and 10 ft behind each baseline.
What is the height of a pickleball net?
The net is 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches at the centre. The posts stand 22 ft apart, so they sit just outside the 20 ft wide court.
What ceiling height does an indoor pickleball court need?
Plan at least 18 ft of clear height above the floor for recreational play. A clear height of 20 to 26 ft is better for regular adult players and lobs. Measure to the lowest light, beam or fan, not to the roof.
Is a badminton court the same size as a pickleball court?
The lines are the same size, 20 × 44 ft for a doubles badminton court. The net is much lower for pickleball and pickleball needs more run-off, so many badminton halls are a little tight for pickleball behind the baselines.
